How to Choose a Gi

If you are looking to buy your first Gi, you must remember a couple things. Inside Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu there are two subcategories, Go and Nogi. In Nogi, you do not need a kimono type uniform, just a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. This article will explain what to look for when buying your first uniform, also called a gi for the Go type of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It begins by what you see first, the color. There are many colors offered, some schools only allow black, white or blue. Those are the traditional ones you will find when browsing, white being the most common.

If you are searching online for your gi, they will list sizes. If the website only has small, medium, or large, look somewhere else. If you want your kimono to fit appropriately, you need to follow the sizing chart with accurate measurements. For your first go, choose a lightweight material versus a heavyweight; they range in the lower $100. If you truly enjoy the sport, then spend more money on a heavier material. Always wash according to the instructions. This includes washing in cold water and hanging to dry.

Once you buy your first Gi you are ready to become a true fighter. Following these simple guidelines will not only help you feel comfortable, but will make you look very professional!
